Have trouble falling asleep because you feel the urge to move your legs? It may be restless leg syndrome.
Restless leg syndrome is characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs. These sensations are often described as burning, creeping, tugging feelings, like bugs crawling inside the legs. These uncomfortable sensations are usually felt when trying to relax. The result is trouble falling & staying asleep. Untreated, this condition can lead to exhaustion & daytime fatigue. People with this condition complain of problems with their jobs, personal life and other activities that require concentration.
Restless leg syndrome occurs in men and women but mostly women. This condition is hard to diagnose and is sometimes overlooked. It is generally a lifelong condition to which there is no cure.
Treatments are usually targeted to relieving symptoms. Movement brings relief but is only temporary. Keeping the legs warm at night may bring relief. Also, decreasing the use of caffeine, alcohol & tobacco may provide some relief.
