Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

This virus is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia among infants & children under 1 year of age. Symptoms include:
  • fever
  • runny nose
  • cough
  • sometimes wheezing
RSV is spread from respiratory secretions thru close contact with an infected person. It can also be spread from contaminated surfaces or objects, that is why it is important to wash your hands often thru out the day. It is easily inactivated by soap and water.

Children with mild cases of RSV usually only require treatment of their symptoms like Tylenol for fever and such.

Prevention of the spread of RSV would include frequent hand washing, not sharing cups or utensils with others & avoiding those that have the virus.
